Mexico responds to Ted Cruz and says that security tasks correspond “exclusively” to his government

The Foreign Ministry of Mexico said Friday that the security tasks in the country are exclusively due to its government, after U.S. Senator Ted Cruz of the Republican Party called on the Mexican authorities to accept the U.S. offer to fight drug cartels.

The Foreign Ministry responded to Cruz’s statements in a statement issued at night, in which he noted that there is good security cooperation with the United States Government, based on our laws and international treaties adopted by both countries, always with respect for the sovereignty of our country, which is indispensable.

He added that in Mexico’s talks with the United States on a possible program of work in security, it starts from principles such as shared responsibility, mutual trust, full respect for our sovereignty and territory, and cooperation without subordination, and said that these approaches were exposed to Cruz by Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente during the meeting they both held on Friday morning.

During a press conference in Mexico City, which he arrived at after visiting Panama and El Salvador this week, Cruz asked Mexico to join the U.S. offer to fight drug traffickers.

My message to the Government of Mexico is: accept our offer as friends. Just as Colombia did with Plan Colombia, accept our offer. We’ll work with you hand in hand. “They end the cartels and that will make the people of the United States safer and make the people of Mexico safer,” he said.

The Texas senator also noted that Mexico could take measures similar to those deployed by El Salvador to deal with crime, according to an AP agency report.

Cruz’s statements and the Mexican Foreign Ministry’s response come a few days before U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio travels to Mexico to meet with senior officials and discuss issues such as the fight against drug traffickers, fentanyl trafficking, and undocumented migration, according to a State Department statement issued Thursday. From 2 to 4 September, Rubio will visit Mexico and Ecuador.
